ORTHODONTIC ENGINEERING TOOLS OF THE TRADE MINI-SCREW, MINI-IMPLANT OR TEMPORARY ANCHORAGE DEVICE (TAD) ≥ THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED WHEN MY ORTHODONTIST INSERTED MY MINI-SCREWS: > My orthodontist took some special radiographs and showed me where the screws would be inserted. > I was asked to rinse my mouth with an anti-bacterial mouthwash. > A local anaesthetic was used to numb my gums. > When the anaesthetic had taken full effect, my orthodontist gently inserted the mini-screws through the gum, into the bone, between and above the teeth. > I experienced a sensation of pressure (but no pain) while the screws were inserted. > The procedure was over in a few minutes. > Rubber chain or springs were attached from the heads of the mini-screws and stretched to the braces on the teeth which needed to move back. > I was given some care instructions and told to use a mild analgesic for the next two days. > An appointment was arranged for the next few weeks for the adjustment of my braces. CARE ADVICE I WAS GIVEN FOR MY MINI-SCREWS: 4 Use an anti-bacterial mouthwash to rinse twice daily for the fi rst 5 days 4 Regularly brush, gently, around the mini-screws using a fl uoride toothpaste and a small headed toothbrush 4 Not to use an electric toothbrush around the mini-screw 4 Not to fi ddle with the mini-screws using my fi ngers or tongue 4 To contact my orthodontist if the brace became detached from the mini-screws. “ ” 123 Th ese mini-screws remained in place for several months, whilst my teeth were moved into better positions. Once my orthodontist was satisfi ed that the desired movements were complete, he simply removed the screws (without any anaesthetic and it didn’t hurt!). He advised me that the gum and bone surrounding the mini-screw would heal entirely within a few days. WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES TO MINI-SCREWS? My orthodontist explained that miniscrews would make my brace treatment as effi cient and eff ective as possible. Th e alternatives given included wearing headgear, extracting more teeth or accepting compromises in my bite – I trusted my orthodontist’s recommendation, because I wanted to achieve the best result.
